Walk details

In Brief

This walk offers some great views, although does not have much in the way of historic value .

Walk Start Point

The route starts at Innerleithen which is situated 7 miles east of Peebles, and west of Galashiels, both on the A72.

Walk Description

Start the walk at the Bike Shop (Probike Sport) (GR: NT 329365) on Innerleithen High Street, head towards Peebles take your first right and keep walking until you meet the large gate at the start of the wood.

The journey from here to the top of Lee Pen (GR: 326386 ) (502) is all uphill, but well worth it, as the views from the top overlooking the valley towards Walkerburn are superb.  If you look south east you look across to Minchmoor, another walk that can be added to this one if you are feeling energetic.  That would finish at Yair on Selkirk and would take 8-9 hours in itotal.  From Lee Pen then head along the ridge towards Lee Burn Head (GR: NT318394), Mill Rig 486, Black Knowe (GR: NT317410 ).  The path along the ridge is well defined, as is the wall and fence you can follow.

From Black Knowe, the heather underfoot makes the going slightly harder, but then head towards Clog Knowe  to the Trig Point (GR: NT308421) at Black Law, a great place for a break and to take in the views.  This is also a great place to watch the sunset, an obvious drawback you have to finish the walk in the dark and definitely not advisable if your navigation is not up to scratch.

Then Downhill from Black Law to Leithen Door which is the saddle between Black Law and Leithen Door Hill (509).  At the saddle you can head south west down on to the forestry roads which will eventually bring you out at the Hub.  Alternatively carry on up the short but steep climb towards Dunslair Heights, from where you can see the
new wind farm.  The next part of the route is through the Glentress Forrest which is also used extensively by mountain bikers, although they have their own trails. Head down Soonhope Craig, then down Jennies Brae, which will bring you out at Peebles Hydro (GR: NT261404) on the outskirts of Peebles.  The other option is to go down Falla Brae and finish at the Hub, a great chance for some good home baking and refreshments (GR:NT284397).

Transport Arrangements

If you are on a Border Walking Guided Walk, transport will be arranged for you.

If you are making your own travel arrangements, we recommend you leave your car at Peebles or Glentress Forrest and take a bus to Innerleithen.

For bus details, or if you will be entirely dependent on public transport, contact traveline (tel: 0870 608 2 608) for impartial information on all forms of public transport.
