Walk details

In Brief

A challenging but rewarding route, this walk must only be undertaken by those with walking experience, including map and compass skills, as it is well exposed on the tops.

Walk Start Point

This walk has two alternative starting points: Moffat or Devils Beef Tub, which both offer good ascent and descent.

Walk Description

Leaving your car at the layby on the A701, follow the fence which will take you to Annanhead Hill (GR: NT058132) and onwards passing Great Hill (GR: NT068132) along Chalk Rig Edge.  You will then pass White Hope Heights (GR: NT096140); from here there is a steep drop down to GR: NT102145, followed by an arduous climb up to Hartfell (GR: NT114136).  Here, you can enjoy a well earned rest at the Tric Point, which offers some very scenic views.  The hard part of the walk is now over, and you can enjoy the rest of the route back to Moffat from Harfell.

At this stage it is important to be careful as you have Hartfell Craig and Falcon Craig on route to Spot Height 724 (GR: NT123128); the ground condition underfoot is good which is a great help at this stage.  Then, head to Swatte Fell (GR: NT118114), next to Blue Cairn (GR: NT108107) and then down to Greygill Head (GR: NT097088).  From here, drop down to the landrover track which will take you to Archbank, where you can either be collected, or carry on to Moffat for a well earned refreshment.

Transport Arrangements

If you are on a Border Walking Guided Walk, transport will be arranged for you.

If you are making your own way there by car, you will need to leave your car in Moffat and either take another car to the start or even a taxi as this is not a circular route.

If you are dependent on public transport, contact traveline (tel: 0870 608 2 608) for impartial information on all forms of public transport.
