Walk details

In Brief

A picturesque walk along the Tweed with a short climb up the Sware, offering some of the best views in Peebles.  As you can walk from the centre of Peebles, you can easily combine the walk with a pub lunch.

Walk Start Point

This walk starts in Peebles, at the car park situated opposite Haylodge Park (GR: NT245406).

Peebles is situated 20 miles South of Edinburgh on the A703 or 23 miles West of Galashiels on the A72.

Walk Description

From the car park, follow the path towards the River Tweed, which is well known for its salmon and trout fishing.  Follow the river upstream towards Neidpath Castle (GR: NT236405), a monument well worth a visit in its own right if you have time.  Although this part of the walk is very picturesque, the best points to photograph the castle are further upstream.  From here, follow the path towards the viaduct (GR: NT233402), and then look out for the Tweed Walk sign post.  This will lead you onto the viaduct and then along the old railway line towards Manor Bridge (GR: NT229396).  Next, cross over the bridge walking on the road, then head up the Sware, crossing over the old bridge.  The walk up the Sware is short but steep, but the views from the top make it all worthwhile (GR: NT234398).  The path back to Peebles is signposted, but if you continue along the road you will come to another view point (GR: NT237397), from which you get a great view of Peebles, and down the valley towards Lee Pen.  Having done that, retrace your steps back and follow the signs which will take you back to Haylodge Park.
