In Brief
A picturesque route with a nice and easy start passing Neidpath Castle and head towards Manor Bridge. Good views of Peebles and surrounding hills.
Walk Start Point
This walk starts by following the Tweed River on the north side up stream towards Neidpath Castle (GR: NT236405). Peebles is situated 20 miles south of Edinburgh on the A703 and 20 miles west of Galashiels on the A72.
Walk Description
Follow the river up to the old viaduct and up the steps on the old railway line. Follow the line until you reach Manor Bridge (GR: NT229395), then cross the bridge and proceed up the Tweed on the south side of the river. This path is marked as part of the Tweed Walk, and will bring you out near barns (GR: NT215391). The path which is lined by trees heads towards Kirkton Manor (GR: NT221 381) where you will meet the road to Manor. Follow the road for 100 metres then take the junction marked for Peebles; you will cross over manor water passing Hallyards, and the fence on your left will stop (GR: NT219372). You can start your ascent of Cademuir from here by following the path. This is a fairly steep near the top, but the path is good. Once on the ridge, the views down manor towards Dollar Law are definitely worth seeing, especially in the evening. There are three forts on the ridge and route back to Peebles, which date back to the Iron Age. Follow the path back to Peebles via Tantah House (GR: NT246392 ), then follow Edderston Road to foot of the Southpark West hill, where the lane will take you back to the River Tweed. Turn left head upstream to Fotheringham Bridge, which will take you into Haylodge Park.
