In Brief
A satisfying gentle walk past the Greymares tail waterfall and around a pretty loch.
Walk Start Point
This walk can be reached from either Moffat (8 mins away) or Selkirk (22 mins) on the A708.The best place to start is at the National Heritage car park (GR:NT186145) (be sure to have change for the parking). A visit to the nearby National Heritage office is a good idea before setting off, where you can see the varieties of wildlife you might spot during your walk. They even have CCTV footage of a peregrine's nest, and if you're lucky you may see some chicks, dependant on the time of year.
Walk description
From the car park, take the path up the side of the Greymares Tail. This path is manmade in parts, but it is advisable to stay on it at all times, and it is easier to walk up than down (particular caution is recommended during the latter). It starts off steeply, but soon levels out to a gentle slope with good views of the waterfalls. Within 30 minutes of leaving the car park you arrive at Loch Skeene which feeds the waterfall, a great spot for a break to enjoy the views of the loch and surrounding hills (GR: NT174160). Although there is not a marked path, there is a very enjoyable walk round the loch. Wearing walking boots is advised as this area is always wet underfoot, and take care when crossing the river.
If you are properly equipped you can extend this walk, by walking the horseshoe above the loch. This will take in Firthybrig Head (7763) (GR: NT 158173) and Lochcraig Head (801) (GR: NT167177).
